EXTRACORPOREAL
SHOCKWAVE THERAPY (ESWT)
Shockwave
therapy is best known for its uses in
the treatment of kidney stones, referred to as Extracorporeal Shockwave
Lithotripsy (ESWL).
Research has shown that shockwave therapy applied
appropriately is also beneficial for the treatment of several
orthopedic and podiatric conditions -- this procedure is called Extracorporeal
Shockwave Therapy (ESWT).
Shockwave
therapy, or ESWT, is an FDA approved "non-invasive or no incision"
treatment for both "plantar fasciitis, commonly associated with heel
spurs" and "lateral epicondylitis, commonly referred to as tennis
elbow." ESWT is also utilized to successfully treat Achilles
tendons, knees, and shoulders. Shockwave therapy has a
success rate of approximately 80%, which is comparable to its invasive
counter parts. However, ESWT is preferrable in the long run
due to the greatly reduced risk of scarring or infection.
Additionally, it must be noted that the success rate for
insertional Achilles tendonitis is well over 90%!
Your
physician offers ESWT. This non-invasive procedure is
performed on an outpatient basis -- it does not require open surgery or
a hospital stay. Patients may leave the treatment center
shortly after the procedure is completed. In October 2000,
the FDA granted clearance of ESWT for the treatment of plantar
fasciitis and in July 2002, granted clearance for treatment of
Epicondylitis. Additional treatment indications are currently
being researched.
